Astebreed is getting a major update to its “Definitive Version” for PC, including all of the PS4 features! Users who already own Astebreed will receive this update for free. Astebreed is a gem of a shmup, I picked it up years ago and left it and I regret doing so because I ended up missing an experience that you barely ever see in shmups. Regarding the gameplay mechanics I loved the creativity that the devs have tried to pull off, giving you a melee and a ranged option, not only the stages and combat was designed for both to synergize but the learning curve that you have to deal with is fantastic. The inclusion of melee attacks is not limited only to the offensive.

Swords attacks supress some bullets, which is just an option because all of the attacks in the game can be dodged just by manoeuvring through the screen. Using the sword you can also dash through the screen from 2 different points, sadly if you point into a direction where an enemy is located, it will home to it so be careful when using it. Shooting is your primary attacking method, but here is the magic part : your third (and not last) fighting skill comes in the form of tagging : holding a shooting button will trigger a scanner that will load a detected enemy with a bar indicating the level of bullet barrages.
